MINISTRY OF MUSIC
By Pastor David Shook

What does the Bible teach concerning the ministry of music? First, what is the definition of music? Music is the science of harmonious sounds.

18  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

19  Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Ephesians 5:18, 19

1  Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in thefirmament of his power.

2  Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellentgreatness.

3  Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery andharp.

4  Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.

5  Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.

6  Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

Psalm chapter 150

- the Hymnbook of the Bible

22  And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

23  Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

Ephesians 1:22, 23

And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. Colossians 1:18

- Jesus is the Head over the music of the church too!

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31

17  And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

23  And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
Colossians 3:17, 23

Christ is to receive all the glory and honor in the church.

1. THERE IS A DANGER OF BEING SO STRICT THAT WE MISS OUT ON GOD’S BLESSINGS.

Go by traditions of men, rather than by God’s Word and the Spirit of God. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. Mark 7:7

2. THE PASTOR IS TO OVERSEE THE CHURCH IN THIS AREA AS WELL AS THE OTHERS.

Through delegation, etc.

3. RECOGNIZE THE PURPOSE OF MUSIC.

Not an end in itself. Prepare the hearts for the message. (music - reflection of the soul) Message consistent with the doctrine of the Church. The message is the most important part of a song.

4. RECOGNIZE THE POWER OF MUSIC.

14  But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

15  And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

16  Let our Lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

17  And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

23  And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him. 1 Samuel

16:14-17, 23 (emotions) psychological effect. (ill. cafeteria -people hurry when music is uptempo) Music has a great effect on the atmosphere of the church.

5. IN MUSIC - GOD STILL WANTS TO WORK THROUGH VESSEL.

If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work. 2 Timothy 2:21

Must be dedicated to Christ.

Platform sets the tone of the service, to be an example of church standards.

6. MUSIC NEEDS TO BE PREPARED.

Not off the cuff - rehearse BEFORE the presentation.

Planning and organizing very important.

Just imagine the world without music.

Remember the definition of music = the science of harmonious sounds. (birds singing, etc.) First time it is mentioned in the Bible And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. Genesis 4:21

(John 2:1-11; Revelation 19:7-16; 5:8-9; 14:2)

Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride: for the land shall be desolate. Jeremiah 7:34

2. Sorrowful - Psalm 137:1-4

9. LIST OF INSTRUMENTS

2. Cymbal - 1 Corinthians 13:1 (basin-shaped musical instrument of brass, used in pairs)

3. Dulcimer - Daniel 3:5, 10, 15 (stringed instrument played on by two sticks)

4. Flute - Daniel 3:5, 7, 10 (wind instrument)

5. Harp - 1 Samuel 16:16, 23 (stringed instrument played on with fingers - David’s time - must have been smaller than the ones we see today.

14. Complete orchestra - 2 Samuel 6:5

CONCL.

Imagine the world without music. Think of all the different places and purposes of music as you go about your world and life today, this week. Here at church, at work, the doctor’s office, the restaurant, the stores, the elevator, on and on.

Thank God for good music that lifts our spirit.

1 Corinthians 9:20 tells us that since we are bought with a price, we are to glorify God in our body and in our spirit. Music involves the spiritual heart and the physical voice. It also involves the lungs, diaphragm, diaphragm=Anatomy. A muscular membranous partition separating the abdominal and thoracic cavities and functioning in respiration. Also called midriff.

Will you surrender your gifts and talents to Him today?
